St. Joseph's was built by Adelante Africa in 2010 and was, in fact, the very first project of Adelante Africa in Uganda.
Once construction was finished It was given to the local community, and is now a government aided school which means the teachers are paid for.
Adelante Africa continues to support school in any way that it can. However, currently the school is badly in need of more desks. The children squash up to 6 at a small desk but even then some have to stand.
St. Joseph's is a happy place and the staff are lovely. Some of the pupils are waiting to take you on a tour in the short video below.
Adelante Africa Secondary School is a private, non-profit boarding school in Igayaza. It provides four years of affordable, quality education enabling children in a remote part of Uganda to achieve the (UCE) Ugandan Certificate of Education, and as a result access to further education. It is a high performing school regualrly achieving the top results in the county.
Scholarship
Every year we offer scholarships to children from the Igayaza area who get a high grade in the PLE (Primary Leavers Examination) but whose families or guardians can't afford to send them to secondary school. These scholarships are funded by individual sponsors.
Teachers
We currently employ a headteacher, a deputy headteacher and 11 experienced teachers to cover the different areas of the curriculum as well as a bursar a nurse, cooks and watchmen. Some of the teachers' salaries are covered by school fees and the rest are funded by individual sponsors.

Student scholarship 30 € per month full sponsorship or 15 € per month half sponsorship.
Teaching salary 100 € per month Full time or 50€ per month Part-time.
Sponsors receive letters and photographs from their child twice a year. They can send letters by email which we will forward to the school. We also post news on this website and on our social media pages.

The school started in 2017 to serve the children living in the Omwaana Tugende Children’s Home and the surrounding community.
It is strictly non-profit. The fees are minimal compared to other schools in the area and children of families who cannot pay them are provided with bursaries. Adelante Africa also supports the school when necessary, providing school furniture and teaching aids.
It was started to safeguard the safety of the children because the nearest Government Aided Primary School, which had a nursery section, was over a kilometre away which is transited by speeding vehicles.
The school is situated in on the gated premises of the Omwaana Tugende Children’s Home
There are 5 classes run by qualified teachers and at least one teaching assistant.
The classes use the sitting rooms of the Omwaana Tugende Children’s Home which are unoccupied during the day and the main hall.
The school has two large areas for outdoor activities and a latrine.
Children are provided free of extra charge with morning porridge containing milk for those who do not have a milk intolerance.
The school’s motto is “Education is my tomorrow”
Every January 30 girls girls join the Young Women’s Sewing Class. It lasts for 11 months and the girls are taught how to make traditional and western clothes like shirts, shorts, skirts and dresses.
The sewing class donate the clothes they make in class to the children of Omwaana Tugende Children’s Home, thus benefiting two needy groups in the community!
At the end of the year there is a very joyful celebration attended by the parents of the girls, where they receive certificates and those that wish to have them receive sewing machines on a non interest loan. They have 2 years to pay back the machines.
The aim of this Project is to give local girls, whose families cannot afford to send them to secondary school or who already have babies, an alternative to early marriage and dependency on agriculture
Every January 20 girls girls join the Young Women’s Hairdressing Class. It lasts for 6 months and in July another group is taken on. The girls are taught how to weave wigs, plait hair and attach extensions.
At the end of the year there is a very colourful celebration with singing and dancing attended by the parents of the girls, where they receive certificates. Tho girls are also encouraged to make business plans and set up their own hairdressing salons. The ones who wish to do this are given a non interest loan with 2 years to pay it back.
The aim of this Project is to give local girls, whose families cannot afford to send them to secondary school or who already have babies, an alternative to early marriage and the possibility.
