Omwaana Tugende Children's Home

Omwaana Tugende Children's Home (OTCH) is registered by the Ugandan Government as a Home for abandoned or dangerously vulnerable children. It is funded by Adelante Africa, supervised by the District authorities and run locally.

As soon as children are taken into the Home plans begin to re-settle them safely back into the community.

Our motto is "It takes a village to raise a child" and, as far as possible, the Home is integrated into the community with children attending the local schools and a "visiting families" programme by which children from the Home spend weekends and holidays with volunteer families in the surrounding villages. In Uganda the extended family usually takes in children who become orphaned or are abandoned. Those who come to live in Omwaana Tugende have no family they can turn to or have been mistreated. They are brought to the home by the District Probation Officer, who follows their progress.

The Home opened in 2012. There are 4 houses (with room for 64 children) built around a central playing area. It has vegetable gardens with fruit and vegetables and an animal husbandry section which help to provide the children with a healthy diet as well as enabling them to learn basic farming techniques.

If you would like to sponsor a child in the home it costs just 15€ per month. We will allocate a child to you and they will write to you several times a year.  The children love to receive letters from their sponsors too.  Just click the red button below and send us your information.  We will contact you very soon.

Omwaana Tugende Shop

We now have an online shop where, for  very reasonable amount, you can purchase clothes and provisions for the children.

This initiative started late in 2023 after we were approached by people who wanted to send some things to the children.  It is very difficult to ship things into Uganda and we have to pay customs duties and other charges to get things through to the home.

By using nthe shop we can source materials locally at a very low cost.  Also, this initiative helps the sewing group as we have enlisted them to make all the clothes that are ordered via the shop.

Take a look at the shop at www.adelanteafrica.org/otchshop and see what you think.

Alternatively, you can make a one-off donation using the purple button at the bottom of this page.  The money raised will be used for provisions, stationery etc. to use in the home.
